Inspirational Quote

"One distinguishing feature of orchid essences in general is their ability to act upon the chakras which exist above the body. This combines with their action in the body to create very powerful shifts in our energy fields, often with very immediate effect. They also have an overall strong focus on helping us directly in relation to our spiritual path."

How She Really Got That Hot Body
by Catherine Carrigan, catherine@totalfitness.net

Anybody who reads my newsletter regularly knows that I really love what I do.

And if you have been reading every month, you know that I am all about being healthy from every possible angle.

But underneath the motivation to be healthy, many people really, actually, deep down, want to look their very best. They want to feel good, but deep down they also want to look good. And frankly, deep down, they wouldn’t actually mind it if they ended up looking absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.

But few people actually have the courage to take the action steps to look the way they dream about.

Part of what keeps me going every day is to listen to my clients’ success stories. Not a day goes by when somebody doesn’t tell me something wonderful that has happened as a result of our work together.

This morning, my first client of the day said to me, “I have to tell you this story because it is all about your work.”

Her boyfriend, a Harvard graduate who is currently in residency at Emory to become a medical doctor in a highly sought-after field, had told her he had once dated an 18-year-old professional New York model.

“You have a better body than she did,” he told her this past week.

My client is a single professional woman in her early 40s. Her boyfriend is 28.

No greater compliment could a man of any age give a woman of any age than to tell her that he thinks her body is beautiful.

A man can tell you that he feels you are a wonderful conversationalist, or that he appreciates your soul, but when he says he loves your body, you know that you really have his attention.

It’s just the score. It’s just the way that it is.

“What we do affects everything,” she told me. “It affects your professional life because it affects your confidence. When you feel this way, you spread positive energy, because, let’s face it, who wants to be around someone who is miserable?”

About two years ago, I was around a small group of women during the month of January. They had resolved they wanted to look better, and were affirming out loud, “I have a rocking hot body.”

I saw these people some months later, and they looked exactly the same.

You can’t just make affirmations if you want to look better. You actually have to take action.

So I thought some of you might be motivated to hear the story of my client.

She found a mentor she can work with long-term. My client has another friend who works out regularly. Her friend is also mid-40s and gorgeous, but her friend works out so hard she has ended up on crutches multiple times. Her friend has told my client that the trainers she works with have actually kicked her in the side when she wasn’t working hard enough.

Needless to say, I don’t believe in kicking anyone for any reason.

Once, on a recent occasion, my client decided to try another exercise class with a friend just for fun.

My client hurt her hip, her knee and her lower back in just one class. She and I then had to spend an entire exercise session to fix what she had injured in the class.

“Now you know what it is like to work out with someone who does not know what they are doing. Just because they are an exercise instructor does not mean they actually understand the body,” I said.

She worked with me to fix what was wrong. When she first started working with me in late February/early March of 2011, my client had been unable to work out for about 10 years due to a severe back injury. She had literally broken her back during a boating accident years ago. She had been knocked into the water unconscious and had literally broken vertebrae in her spine.

Before working with me, she felt deeply discouraged. She had trouble lifting her laundry basket or walking her dog.

We took the time to do therapeutic exercise for her back. I taught her what she could do on her own to feel better.

On a couple of occasions, due to severe stress, her back has bothered her again and she has come in for separate healing sessions.

Once she worked through the back pain, we could work out safely and regularly.

She brings her lunch to work. This morning, she told me she was bringing soup, a bag of carrots and two oranges. Before we worked out, she had made herself a frittata of eggs, goat cheese and sundried tomatoes. She had plenty of energy to do a great workout because she had eaten well beforehand, and she maintains good energy all day long because she eats fresh food throughout the day.

She drinks a huge bottle of water every day. I know this for a fact because she brings her water bottle to every workout.

She works out regularly, but not excessively. She and I lift weights together once a week. She is also a regular member of my evening yoga class and comes once or twice depending on her schedule. She also goes to Zumba class once a week, where I have advised her to do the exercises in a low-impact way, and walks her dog on the weekends.

She is consistent. My client maintains her exercise schedule no matter what. We worked out the weeks before and after Thanksgiving and before and after Christmas. We work out when she feels good and also when she doesn’t feel that great. We just modify what we do if she is not up to par.

That’s it. It’s not rocket science. Fresh food, lots of water and regular exercise. Above all, moderation and consistency with no excuses.

If you have the courage to put your deep desires into action, come see me.

Chinese Edition Of My Book, Healing Depression
by Catherine Carrigan, catherine@totalfitness.net

A client of mine in Los Angeles who visits the public library there has found a Chinese edition of my book, Healing Depression: A Holistic Guide. She very kindly copied the cover page and sent me a PDF so I could see it for myself.

My book was the best-selling book of the original publisher, Heartsfire Books, which passed on the copyright to Marlowe and Co. of New York. It came out in 1997.

I was aware that people in other countries were interested in translating the book into other languages, but up until now I did not know until now that this had actually been done.

My book was a labor of love. I joked at the time I could have made more money cleaning toilets at McDonald’s than I did publishing my book, which took me three years to write. I thought to myself as I wrote it, “If I can help even one person avoid what has happened to me, then it’s all worth it.”

Since writing my book, I have empowered more people than I can even count to be able to heal their depression without drugs.

I always like to be positively focused, so I refrain from disparaging psychiatric drugs or the people who dispense them. What I do in the book is explain how to go about healing the mind in a holistic way.

As for myself, I was on lithium and antidepressants for 18 years. I have now been free of these drugs for 18 years, and am all the healthier and happier for having gotten off of them.

My personal goal at the time was to have a free and easy spirit without drugs. Since my father and brother are both medical doctors, I had been strongly discouraged from going drug-free.

I have since also helped countless clients get off virtually every drug you can possibly imagine – high blood pressure medication, pain medication, anti-anxiety medication, ADD medication, drugs for digestive and stomach disorders – I personally couldn’t even list them all. This is on top of empowering my clients to get off illegal drugs like marijuana and legal but debilitating drugs like alcohol. My focus is to teach people how to live healthy, balanced lives in harmony with their true selves.

I am so personally grateful to all the people who have helped me become a healthier, happier person and taught me how to do the same for others. I have now been studying natural healing methods for the brain for 18 years. It is only natural to me to pass on this gift to others and to be happy to see the Chinese edition.

When I went to Scotland in September 2009 to visit Don Denis on the Isle of Gigha, it was the most rewarding trip of my lifetime.

Don Dennis is the creator of Living Tree Orchid Essences at www.healingorchids.com.

Like many people, Don did not quite recognize his own talents. He spent 1 1 1/2 to 2 hours every day tending to his orchids, making healing remedies from them and photographing them. He knew that the essences he made from the orchids were quite powerful because healers from around the world would come to Scotland to study them.

But little did he truly understand just how uplifting his photographs of his orchids actually are.

He was just taking pictures to illustrate his work and accompany the text explaining the benefits of each one.

I convinced Don to make greeting cards from his photographs. More people would be attracted to his work, I argued, if he made the cards and people sent them out around the world.

Because I like to support my friends, I was one of his first customers for his cards when they finally came out and bought multiple boxes of his cards both to give to and send to my friends.

I also immediately framed seven of these cards and put them on the wall opposite to my bed so that I could wake up and go to sleep meditating on the orchids.

While I was in Scotland, my guidance told me to get another one of his photographs enlarged, frame it and mount it on the wall above my bed.

But like many other people, I did not listen to my guidance.

In fact, I fought it.

I kept arguing with myself.

The photograph would have to be sent from Scotland rolled up in a tube. More than likely, I thought, it would arrive wrinkled by the time it made it to Atlanta.

Then there was the expense of the shipping all the way from Scotland and the added expense of putting the beautiful photograph in a suitable frame, as not just any frame would do for a photograph that magnificent.

The orchid in the photograph is Laeliocattleya Angel Love. It makes an essence called Angelic Canopy. Don says that if you can have only one of his Living Tree Orchid Essences, this would be the one to have. It makes you feel lifted up and protected by the angels.

I reasoned with myself that my yearning for this picture would eventually pass.

It didn’t.

I kept thinking about Don’s photograph. I could not get it out of my mind.

Some months after I originally wanted it, I went through a particularly challenging time in my life. “So that’s why I needed that picture,” I thought to myself.

I kept reasoning that when the difficult time would eventually pass, I wouldn’t need that picture any more.

Every time I looked at the existing picture that was already framed above my bed, all I could think about was how much better I would feel if I had Laeliocattleya Angel Love in its place.

Finally, two and a half years later, I was still yearning for this picture.

I emailed Don.

By now, Don had a new photograph of a new blossom. He gave me a choice, and I picked the newest one. The newest photograph - to me - is even more stunning, even more uplifting, even more exciting than the one I originally craved.

Finally, I ordered my picture.

It did indeed arrive wrinkled in the tube from Scotland.

The frame was indeed ridiculously expensive, even though I used a 50 percent off coupon from Michael’s to get the job done.

But when the photograph was finally mounted on the wall above my bed, I looked at it, and my entire mind-body-spirit just melted. At last, it was at home!

“How many orchids do I need, exactly?” I wondered to myself.

I have live cultivars in my studio, so that I can look at them every day while doing my healing work. The energy there is so good they bloom continuously and repeatedly, often for years on end.

No matter how difficult the client’s problems may seem to be, all I have to do is look at my orchids and I know there is a way to heal them.

Orchids are the most evolved flowers on the face of the planet.

They selflessly uplift us. Rare. Quiet. Stunningly beautiful.

To my mind, they make the most powerful of all the flower essences. I use Don’s remedies every day for myself and virtually every day with my clients.

I told a good friend of mine recently how I had struggled with myself about whether to order the photograph and she observed, “Catherine, YOU are an orchid.”
