An Interesting Quote

"Today, we spend most of our time isolated from natural sources of energy, and disease and imbalance are the
result. We are taught to be afraid of the sun and its life-giving force. We eat foods grown on overstressed Earth,
depleted of minerals. Our Water is toxic, as is our overly conditioned and polluted air. By separating ourselves
from the natural elemental forces and attempting to control them, we have created a tremendous imbalance in both
the Earth's energy and body, and our own."
Healing is a process of restoring a state of dynamic balance to the body and energy systems by moving back into
harmony with these natural forces."

Yes, I Think I Will Have That Fabulous Breakfast
by Nina Lynn, nina@totalfitness.net
(Editor's note from Catherine Carrigan: I recently gave a lecture to a group of women. About 75 percent of them ate breakfast,
which was great, but when I asked what they were eating, the only ones in the audience who were actually eating a decent breakfast
happened to be my clients. Most women make the mistake of skimping on breakfast, and the best breakfast eater I know is my colleague
Nina Lynn. There is a direct correlation between how Nina eats breakfast and how she looks, which happens to be absolutely
gorgeous. I see so many women with low brain chemistry and low female hormones with flabby midsections who happen to be making
the "breakfast mistake," and I wish I could convert them all.)
Once, I spent two weeks with Nina on a business trip. We worked out only about 30-35 minutes about five days each week.
We ate occasional ice cream and other treats and got plenty of rest. What we ate was exactly the same as I eat at home -
the only difference was how we ate. We ate a more fabulous breakfast than usual as we were forced to dine at restaurants.
After two weeks, I lost an entire jean size without even trying! So when I wanted to have a good article for our newsletter
on why breakfast is so important, I asked Nina to explain. While we are not all lucky enough to spend two weeks hanging out
with Nina, if you really want to look like her you can all choose to follow her example and eat a truly magnificent
breakfast. Consuming at least 40 grams of protein before lunch is one of the main lessons that we teach all our new clients.)
Too many people, particularly women, tend to skip breakfast, using a variety of excuses ranging from, "I have no time for
breakfast" to "I'm on a diet, and I'm trying not to eat too much." Unfortunately, for the dieters, research shows that people
who skip breakfast tend to pack on body fat more readily than those who start their day with a healthy breakfast. As for those
who claim to have no time for breakfast, they usually DO find time for coffee and a doughnut, (or what ever sweets they can get
their hands on), at their desk around 10:00 a.m.
There is a physiological reason for the sugar cravings of breakfast skippers. When you get up in the morning your body
is low on glucose, the fuel for your cells, and your body will replenish this resource any way it can. The easiest way
is to crave sugar, which converts to glucose quickly to keep the brain running, the main computer of the body. If however,
one chooses to skip breakfast, the body will revert to an alternative method of providing glucose to the brain by breaking
down muscle tissue. This is not a good choice for anyone - especially not someone who is trying to lose body fat, since the
more muscle you have the more calories you burn just to stay alive.
This conversion of muscle to glucose is triggered by the hormone adrenaline, which is secreted by the adrenal glands about
an hour after rising if the body is not supplied with proper nutrition. As our regular Total Fitness newsletter readers know,
no one needs to further tax the adrenal glands, which for most people are already burned out and causing a laundry list of
fatigue-related symptoms.
Trying to function without eating breakfast is like trying to drive a car without gas. You'll be low on energy, won't be able
to think clearly, and a lot of people get down right grouchy. This is because of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar will send you r
unning to the break room for whatever sweets you can find, OR, if you DO make it to lunch, to the nearest buffet where you play
the game of "how much food can I pile on one plate."
Why put yourself through that when the solution is SO easy-eat breakfast. Yes, there is a catch: it needs to be the right kind
of breakfast. Ideally you want a protein, healthy fat, non-starchy vegetable and a real carbohydrate. For example: scrambled eggs
with spinach and bell peppers, one slice of rice bread with organic butter, or a nut butter, and organic fruit. Another choice would
be organic oatmeal with raisins and walnuts, sweetened with raw honey, sliced tomatoes and a slice of nitrate free organic turkey
I hate to break it to all of you cereal lovers, but cereal is NOT a good choice. Boxed cereals are processed grains (carbohydrates),
and the pasteurized milk you eat them with is mostly sugar-water because the pasteurization process kills all the nutrients. So, what
you have is a meal of high glycemic carbohydrates that quickly raise your blood sugar followed by a sharp drop in your energy level just
an hour or two later.bacon. Even leftovers from the night before would work as long as they include all the macronutrients.
Charles Poliquin, the Olympic strength coach, is equally adamant about the importance of a good breakfast. He says that the first
40 grams of protein you eat every day goes to rebuild your immune system. If you are not rebuilding your immune system, you are
not rebuilding your muscle tissue or your brain chemistry. He wants all his clients to eat at least 40 grams of protein every
day before lunch so this important rebuilding process can take place. When you consider that one egg has just 7 grams of protein,
you will see what an effort the average person has to make.
It is not always easy to make healthy choices for breakfast - or at any other meal for that matter. However, eating a healthy breakfast is
vital for your well-being. At Total Fitness we help our clients plan healthy and balanced meals based on their specific metabolism and goals.

Paula's Detox Tips
by Paula Owens, paula@totalfitness.net
-
Eliminate refined sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, soda, wheat and dairy products, gluten, table salt, soy and hydrogenated,
trans fats. Most of these products cause stress to the body and create dysfunction, stimulating fat storing hormones = added body weight.
-
Do not starve yourself. Stay away from anything called a "diet." Healthy eating must be viewed as a lifestyle for health, vitality,
longevity and fat loss. Diets are a major stressor to your body causing a damaged metabolism, hormonal disruption, muscle loss and
fat storage.
-
Stop drinking coffee and alcohol. Drink more organic green tea, preferably before 1 p.m. Also, include detox teas such as Pau'd Arco and
dandelion tea.
-
Eat small mini-meals every 3 to 4 hours. Always eat a breakfast that includes an organic protein source and healthy fats.
Include plenty of organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables.
-
Consume an appropriate amount of filtered water daily. Your body is 85% water and physiologically water works as a catalyst to
most functions within your body. Add the juice from a whole lemon and/or lime. Bodyweight x .7 = the number of ounces daily
you should personally to consume.
-
Practice yoga or qigong, bounce on a rebounder or walk briskly or follow any workout that cleanses the body of toxins. Practice
at least 2 to 5 minutes of deep, full diaphragmatic belly breathing daily.
-
Do not eat after 8 p.m. The night is the time for your body to rest and detox, not digest your food. Eating before bedtime
disrupts sleep, creates digestive distress and minimizes your production of growth hormone.
-
Keep a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and waking around the same time. Optimally, you should be asleep by 10 p.m.,
awake by 6 a.m. Your body repairs physically and psychologically at night during sleep. This is a time for your body to
balance hormones, repair tissues and regenerate. If you're highly physical, more sleep may be needed.
-
Detox your mind. Your thoughts are the most powerful way to maintain health and well-being and to heal your body. Turn off
the news. Generate positive emotions and thoughts. Practice positive, inspiring affirmations daily.
-
Surround yourself with like-minded people. Form win-win relationships. Determine who is trustworthy and who displays character
traits of integrity, honesty and authenticity. Dissolve those relationships that no longer serve you in a positive light and
enjoy relationships that feed your soul and make you feel good.
-
Keep a food journal for one week. Research shows that people who journal what they eat tend to lose twice as many pounds and make
healthier food choices.
-
Reward yourself. Allow yourself time to rest without feeling guilty. Give yourself daily sunshine. Indulge in a long bath with
Epsom salts with a relaxing essential oil such as lavender. Enjoy more sex! Schedule a massage or sauna. Listen to your
intuition and give your body, mind and soul the support it needs.
-
Express gratitude every day. Be Authentic!
Feel Your Feelings, Experience Health
by James Williamss, james@totalfitness.net
I often see self-help and spiritual authors write that to change your life you must change your thoughts.1-3 I even heard the same
phrase being preached at a Unity church recently.4
Our thoughts may be one of the barriers to successful change, but it's time that as a society we finally act on one huge
truth: to receive the gifts of health, happiness, and success, we have to be able to fully experience our emotions.
Arnold Patent, a spiritual teacher, suggests that as we come to accept all our feelings just as they are, and to
trust and follow our intuition, we find ourselves guided perfectly in our interactions with everyone.
Success in anything in life starts with the inner work of ridding the old emotions you've been harboring5 that
no longer serve you. It becomes possible for you to accept a solution to a "problem" and transform it once you
start to acknowledge it lovingly.5 Until then, you're either practicing denial or are judging it and adding fuel
to the fire.
On the other hand, it is not helpful to judge anything or anyone, according to Patent. He says that whenever we judge, we lock the
emotional energy of that experience into our bodies, and it stays there until we release the emotions related to the judgment. This
is why people stay sick, overweight, or unhappy - they continually focus on what they don't want by making it a "problem."
Once you acknowledge the presence of a "problem," your level of success in dealing with it is determined by the amount of truth
you can accept about that issue without getting angry, upset, or re-experiencing the emotions.5
To be successful, you have to realize there is no information you need to go out and find - there is no solution outside of you to
experience health, happiness or financial success. No guru or mentor can do it for you. You are the solution and will be guided to
what you need intuitively once you connect with your emotions.
You see, your emotions and your thoughts from past events become your memories. Your memories are stored in cells throughout your
body - not necessarily in your brain6,7 - which is why emotions are felt throughout the body, and not just in the head. For the guys
out there, here's an analogy: a computer hard disk scatters data about a file all over the hard disk, and not in one place. Our bodies
are the same.
Our perceived need to deal with "problems" only attracts more difficulties to us. Every perceived "problem" is a signal to feel our
feelings. When we feel love for these feelings, we open up the energy bound in them and can transform our health and happiness.8
From a spiritual perspective, there are no "problems" - just opportunities to look for the wisdom offered in every situation.
Western societies have focused on the male-driven intellect for the past 400 years. The more female, emotive sides of ourselves have been suppressed.
Now is the age of emotion. You can't hide from your power to succeed because your emotions hold the power to bring you the greatest happiness
you could ever imagine. The more willing you are to feel your feelings, the more you'll connect with the power that resides within them, and
the more likely you are to experience success, health, and happiness.8

Healing Baths
by Catherine Carrigan, catherine@totalfitness.net
Basic Healing Bath
1 cup Epsom Salts
1 cup baking soda
Mix in the average bath tub. Sit in the bath at least 20 minutes. This bath will clear your aura. It helps clear any energies
or emotions you may have picked up from other people during the day, and is helpful for those who interact with the public or
who are caretakers or healers of others (i.e. nurses or home health aides). It is also good for highly sensitive people who
are too empathic and who take on the cares and worries of others. Of course, I also recommend this bath for those who want
to release lactic acid after a tough workout. Do not be surprised if you notice yourself releasing not only muscle aches and
tension but also if the water turns a slight color. This is psychic debris that you have cleared from your energy field.
Ginger Bath To Clear Arthritis, Gout and Joint Pain
1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda
2 teaspoons ground ginger
You can use ground ginger from your herb cabinet - just basic ginger like you would buy in any spice section of any regular grocery
store. This bath is very powerful to get rid of aches and pains. You may experience a heating effect while sitting in the bath. If you
are extremely toxic, start with the basic healing bath every day for a few days before starting the ginger bath.
Bath To Alleviate Depression
1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda
Rosemary from your garden
Take any amount of rosemary from your garden - say 1 cup will do. Put in a pot of water on your stove and boil as a tea until
the liquid turns dark. Strain and save the liquid. Put the liquid in your bath along with the Epsom salts and baking soda.
Rosemary is a natural anti-depressant and removes negative spiritual energy. Be sure to sit in the bath 20 to 30 minutes.
This bath is also recommended after a person has received a very deep spiritual healing.
Bath To Calm An Overactive Mind
1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda
Lavender from your garden
Take any amount of lavender from your garden. Put in a pot of water on your stove and boil as a tea. Strain and save the
liquid. Put the liquid in your bath along with the Epsom salts and baking powder. Lavender calms an overactive mind and is
helpful for people who need to stop worrying and relax more.
Note: Our garden has gone through some reconstruction recently, but I usually keep an herb garden with rosemary, lavender
and other herbs to share with my clients. If you would like an herb garden of your own, please consult with our gardener,
Gabe Horrisberger. You can reach Gabe at gardenr@bellsouth.net.
